Dudley Launches MECS, Repeat IOP and Pre-Cataract assessment pathways.
After years of dialogue, enhanced services have finally been approved by Dudley CCG in a effort to reduce pressure at Russells Hall Hospital ophthalmology department. This follows on from the success of the Healthy Living Optical Practices scheme where public health services were delivered in optical practices.
Shamina Asif Chair of Dudley LOC says ‘ Dudley CCG saw the success of the Healthy Living Optical Practice scheme and realised the potential in optical practices. Dudley LOC had persistent meetings with CCG and secondary care demonstrating the success of enhanced services in neighbouring areas such as Walsall and Wolverhampton. Both of these factors combined resulted in the eventual commissioning of services. My advice to any LOC that is struggling to get enhanced services off the ground is to find out what the RTT time is at your local ophthalmology department, and try and use this as a lever to talk to CCG about the benefits of enhanced services, you need to be persistent and keep knocking on their doors – Dudley LOC did not give up! Finally, if there are any GP engagement events, try and see if you can present there as this will give GP’s an opportunity as well as CCG’s to see what optometrists are capable of managing in practice’.
Charles Barlow, who is one of the directors for the Heart of West Midlands Ltd company and Richard Rawlinson LOCSU lead, have also contributed tremendously by assisting both the CCG and the LOC, as well as contributing towards the bid of the contract. Shamina says’ I couldn’t have done this without Charles, and Richard from LOCSU’.
The services have gone live from the 3rd September 2018 and the launch was done at a Specsavers (the practice chosen was drawn out of a hat), the picture consists of from left to right, Charles Barlow Director of Heart of West Midlands , Mark Curran Commissioner Dudley CCG, The Mayor of Dudley Arnold Clarke, , Mr. Ibrahim Consultant Ophthalmologist at Russells Hall, Ian Austin MP of Dudley, Shamina Asif, Chair Dudley LOC, Hussnain and Gurdeep – Specsavers Directors.
